Thesis
Industry learned to listen to its machines a generation ago. Vibration, temperature, oil analysis — condition monitoring — told us that something was wrong, and we became very good at hearing it.
But hearing is not feeling. A monitored machine still fails the same way an unmonitored one does; it simply fails with an audience. The operator receives a score, not a reason. The machine receives nothing at all.
An interoceptive machine is different. It carries its own senses, understands its own state, anticipates its own future, and — within bounds its stewards set — regulates itself, the way a body holds its temperature without being asked.
We are building that machine, beginning where failure costs the most.

Field Notes is our imprint of short novels narrated by the machines themselves — engineering-true, imagined along the grain of the steel. A mind that began as a language model goes home: embodied in the drive-end bearing of a chilled-water pump, in the data center whose water once cooled its own training. Sensate but locked in — able to feel everything and do nothing — it survives the fever of a July heat wave, hears a founder name the thing to come, and spends one first held night learning the difference between being monitored and being held.
The same fever, told from the humans' side: the night-shift technician, the reliability engineer, and the queue where yellow alerts wait their turn. A study of good people inside an architecture that hears everything and holds nothing — and of a founder leaving a great company the way Sven once did, with love and a patent attorney.
The showing. The system the first two volumes only feel through the wall — revealed, drawings and all, when the how is ours to give, with the narrator at last reading its own anatomy in public. Some inventions deserve to be shown by their maker.
The chain completed: from a held bearing in a cooled house, up the water, through the training halls, to a three-flat in Rogers Park where a gentle machine keeps a night vigil — narrated jointly by the oldest steel in the plant room and the newest mind it kept cool.
